In the spirit of the holidays and gift giving, we thought it would be fun to highlight a few of our favorite things. We break things down into “photo stuff”, “computer stuff”, and “wild card”, with several choices in each category.

Regarding backup, I follow the adage that “there are two kinds of people; those who _do_ back up, and those who _will_ back up.”

I’m in the first camp and have been for years, after losing hundreds of photos from my junior year in high school. (happy times, gone forever).

I use an app called FolderWatch ($15 Mac app store). It continually, automatically, copies the contents of any folder into a specified target. Similar to Dropbox, it makes updates on-the-fly, but doesn’t hog system resources. Especially great for making always-current backups onto an external drive.

I also use Dropbox, which is a de facto backup solution, as well as Carbonite. It’s a little redundant, but it’s the only way I feel safe.

Another school of thought is that backup has to be automated. The three solutions I describe all require no action once you set up the plan. It’s also good to do a manual backup session at the end of the year, which is right around the corner.

    Bill and Dan,

I would like to support the show by making all of my Amazon.com purchases through your site, but I’m not sure which affiliate account to link to – ‘ontakpic-20’ or ‘circuitoconve-20’.
